2022 St. Amant Winery Mohr-Fry Ranch Alicante Bouschet

This heirloom variety was popular during Prohibition for its ease of shipping due to its thick skin, loose cluster, and dark color. This unusual, red-fleshed grape has been farmed at Mohr-Fry Ranch since 1922 and has played a significant role in Lodi and California wine history.
Originally planted at Mohr-Fry Ranches in 1922 at the height of prohibition, the vineyard was redeveloped in 2014. We became interested Alicante becuase it was historically used as a blending variety with Zinfandel, and many of California’s historic old vine vineyards have Alicante Bouschet vines interplanted in the field. Additionally, Alicante Bouschet has been widely grown in the Alentejo region of Portugal where it is often blended with Tempranillo.

WINEMAKER'S NOTES
Picked in early November and hand sorted, the grapes were allowed to spontaneously ferment at cool temperatures for 7 days. Gentle punchdowns helped lend balance. The wine was pressed and racked to 60 gallon neutral oak barrels for 10 months barrel aging. A natural malolactic fermentation was completed in barrels.
