MEET OUR PEOPLE
Michael David Winery / Winemaker
HOW MANY YEARS HAVE YOU BEEN MAKING WINE?
I’ve been making wine for 16 years.
HAVE YOU ALWAYS LIVED IN LODI?
No, I moved to Lodi after graduating from C.S.U. Fresno 2004 with a Bachelor of Science in Food Science Enology and a minor in Viticulture.
WHAT MAKES A “GREAT” WINE?
Science and art go hand in hand with making wine; it’s never one without the other.
WHAT IS THE MOST DIFFICULT ASPECT OF MAKING WINE?
Mother Nature – she throws a mean curveball!
ANY ADVICE FOR SOMEONE JUST STARTING OUT AS A WINEMAKER?
Use your skills – whether they are learned academically or handed down – and blend those into your creative process. It’s helpful to have peers review your work through the winemaking process.
WHO HAS BEEN THE MOST INFLUENTIAL MENTOR IN YOUR CAREER? WHY?
Adam Mettler (Mettler Family Vineyards and Michael David Winery) has taught me so much about working with Zinfandel in the Lodi Appellation. He has not only been my mentor but my dear friend since C.S.U. Fresno.
WHAT IS THE ONE THING YOU’D LIKE PEOPLE TO KNOW ABOUT LODI?
Lodi is a wonderful community to raise a family with a great history in the wine industry. These are just a couple examples of attributes which attracted me as a winemaker upon graduating from CSU Fresno.
DO YOU HAVE ANY IRRATIONAL FEARS OR SUPERSTITIONS AS THEY RELATE TO YOUR JOB?
Never walk under a ladder–plain and simple.
